Petroglyphs

I awoke to my cousin Grace shaking me. “It’s time to go see the petroglyphs. Do you still want to go?” I managed to mumble through the fog of sleep “yes, yes, give me three seconds” (Well, I’m not so great at number percentages when I’m wide awake either!)  As I looked out the bedroom window I saw that sun had already peeked over the mountain tops. Somehow, I got out of my comfy bed and managed to get dressed and fix my hair… Don’t ask me how; I don’t actually remember doing it!

All five of us piled into the Suburban and shortly thereafter arrived at the base of a hill. (It would be called mountain in Pennsylvania) After adjusting our shoe laces- or flip-flops in my case- we started on the hike.
I had heard about these petroglyphs back in March, when my cousin Seth had came down to visit us. He had told me about them, and had also showed me some pictures. So, when he offered to take us up to look at them I jumped at the possibility to see them for myself.
Our Guide: Seth
We hiked up to the top of the mountain; scaring jack rabbits out of hiding and trying to avoid grabbing a cactus for support! Finally, we saw our first petroglyph! It was a little swirly drawing. That wasn't the only one though! There were other petroglyphs that were spread across the mountain top and so we climbed all over looking at them. We even got our picture taken next to a bunch of them!

Petroglyphs (also called rock engravings) are images created by removing part of a rock surface by picking or carving. The word petroglyph comes from the Greek words; petro meaning” stone” and glyphein meaning “to carve”.
We debated about what these are. Seth thought they might be pestle bowels and
I decided on dog (or wolf!) bowels. What do you think?

Thanks for coming along for the hike!  Wasn't it fun? Thanks Seth :)
